Every day hundreds of millions of surveillances cameras are capturing videos in areas like government property, public transit, commercial buildings, and roadways. By the year 2020, it is expected that the number of surveillance cameras will reach more than one billion around the world.

NVIDIA noted that Metropolis is the foundation of the AI City, and it is an edge-to-cloud platform that can turn anonymized video into valuable insights. NVIDIA Metropolis: Artificial Intelligence for Smarter Cities

They also mentioned that it is driven by powerful technologies like NVIDIA® Jetson™ TX2 at the edge and NVIDIA Tesla® in the data center and it also delivers intelligent video analytics for a wide range of applications.

Deepu Talla, vice president and general manager of the Tegra business at NVIDIA also said that deep learning is enabling powerful intelligent video analytics that turns anonymized video into real-time valuable insights, enhancing safety and improving lives. The NVIDIA Metropolis platform enables customers to put AI behind every video stream to create smarter cities.

Currently, surveillance videos are stored in a disc to analyze or review later, which creates a huge bulk video data and only a small part of them are monitored by humans. In addition, initial real-time analytics are far less reliable than humans. These two problems will be solved by NVIDIA’s new deep learning technology which identifies the metadata and pulls out the information in real-time.

More than 50 industry leader NVIDIA AI city partners such as Avigilon, Dahua, Hanwha Techwin, Hikvision, and Milestone, already help customers reveal insights and take real-time action using deep learning on NVIDIA GPUs.

Dr. Mahesh Saptharishi, chief technology officer at Avigilon stated that there are a nearly infinite number of activities taking place with the fast-paced environment of a city and that he was excited by the potential of NVIDIA's Metropolis platform and as Avigilon continues to deliver AI-powered surveillance solutions and video analytics that focus users' attention on what matters most, in order to act.

According to Hikvision Research Institute president, Shiliang Pu NVIDIA's end-to-end Metropolis platform can be applied to video streams to create smarter and safer applications for a variety of industries - from transportation to commercial. The benefit of GPU deep learning is that data can be analyzed quickly and accurately to drive deeper insights.

It seems that in the near future we will be witnessed autonomous cities that prevent crimes, car crashes and put the whole community in order.
