Low light conditions are always challenging for surveillance cameras. In some cases , capturing the details at night can be vital. Leader manufacturers of surveillance industry working on this issue and developing better technologies everyday. There are three main factors that are necessary for providing a good night vision.

Firstly, lens of the camera must be gathering light as much as possible and delivering with minimum loss to the sensors in a very low light environments.

Secondly, sensors must have a large surface which provides a bigger area per pixel. This allows more lights being received and reduce the noise generated from heat.

Finally, system requires high complexity image processing technology. When the noise in an image decreases, data size also reduces. This saves more storage space and needs less bandwidth.

Samsung-Hanwha one of the frontiers in surveillance industry- released their latest Wise NR Technology that provides a much better visibility at very low light conditions.

Samsung-Hanwha states that “Wise NR featured in Wisenet X Series cameras is a 3-DNR technology combining Hanwha Techwin's noise reduction technologySSNR (Smart Super Noise Reduction) and other technology and experience the company has developed. It featuresadaptive motion detection (AMD) technology and a powerful pattern matching technology optimized for low light levelenvironments prone to generating high noise levels.

With AMD technology, it compares the current image with the previous frame to identify areas with movement, and applies2-DNR based on pattern matching in areas with movement to produce a clear image with no afterimage. 3-DNR is appliedto areas without movement to not only remove noise but also to restore information lost due to noise and physical limitations.Through doing so, the image will contain accurate information which was not clear in the original frame. Furthermore,with Wise NR, the image is encoded with a low bit rate allowing the image to retain its clear image quality even when beingtransferred and stored efficiently.”

How to Activate Noise Reduction Function?

The noise reduction level of the noise reduction function, SSNR (Smart Super Noise Reduction) with Wise NR technology, canbe customized.

  • Menu Path: Camera Web Viewer-> Setup-> Audio & Video -> Camera Setup -> Exposure

SSNR features three options: Off, On and Wise NR. It is recommended to use “On” in environments with lots of movementand “Wise NR” in environments with medium-low movement. The SSNR 2D level modifies spatial noise filtering level, and the SSNR 3D level modifies the temporal noise filtering level.

  • An excessively high 2D level can cause image quality degradation during noise reduction.
  • An excessively high 3D level can produce an afterimage (motion blur) on moving objects.

Additionally Samsung Hanwha states "Through SSNR with the unique low light level image process technology Wise NR, Hanwha Techwin is able to provide clear color images in dark environments with limited light. This is achieved by effectively reducing noise, which is inevitable in lowlight environments, and by minimizing the afterimage (motion blur) of objects. Furthermore, with noise reduction applied,the image data size can be significantly reduced compared to images with high level noise in low light level conditionsallowing efficient storage and network transmission."
