The initial 34-camera system in one area expanded to the installation of cameras in Jubilee Park, Uptown and the Arts District, with a total of 115 cameras. The new plan will increase these surveillance efforts.

“Due to the deterrent and evidentiary effectiveness of the surveillance cameras, the Dallas Police Department is seeking to implement up to 600 surveillance cameras located throughout 27 areas in the city, specifically in high crime areas, transmitting wireless video feeds 24 hours a day,” the memorandum explained. “This system will have a mix of cameras installed as semi-permanent installations that have the ability to be moved quickly to various locations, as dictated by criminal activity or any other special surveillance needs.”

Police officials have noted that there are 27 locations throughout the city that are deemed to be “high risk.” By installing the new Dallas security camera system installations, they believe that the constant monitoring will help decrease crime in these key places.

While the first security system was installed as permanent equipment on buildings and street poles, to be monitored 24 hours a day, many of the 600 new cameras will be portable.
