How Cloud computing will save the surveillance industry

The introduction and popularity of cloud computing has broken into the security camera sector in a strong, noticeable way. Many urban surveillance infrastructures - in both private homes and the public sphere - rely on the cloud for their day-to-day operations, and understanding how this technology works can help a home or business owner decide if hybrid, public or private cloud systems can be integrated to help meet security and surveillance needs.

According to Cisco Systems, cloud computing is a model that affords users the ability to share a pool of configurable computing resources for convenient, omnipresent, on-demand network access wherever an individual can connect to the internet. In the past, users could only access their files and information from one stationary computer or when connected to one similarly stationary business network. However, with cloud computing taking over the business landscape, people are no longer confined to one single computer for their online needs and interactions. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the cloud has essential characteristics and models that are applicable to the security industry.

• Broad network access: Cloud networks can be accessed through a variety of platforms, including laptops, tablets, mobile phones, desktop computers, workstations and more. This increases its usability in a vast number of situations, like checking video feeds while on vacation.
• Resource pooling: When the computing resources are pooled over the internet, multiple users are able to experience a sense of location independence associated with their shared cloud network. When specific locations are obsolete, resources like storage, memory, network bandwidth and processing are able to come to the forefront without confounding physical barriers, like distance between the user's present location and the area being monitored.
• On-demand service: Without requiring human interaction with a service provider, users can manage their own computing capabilities to meet personal needs and preferences. These capabilities include network storage and server time.
• Private or community models: Private clouds are created for the exclusive use of one user or organization who will own, use and manage the resources. Public and hybrid cloud models, on the other hand, are created for the use of multiple organizations, and access is decided by the original user. Both of these models are relevant to the video surveillance industry, as they can allow users to keep the feed for private use or give access to local authorities.

The cloud for video surveillance

Cloud computing has had a significant effect on the video surveillance industry because it gives users a new opportunity to view their feeds from remote locations. When home or business owners are not at their properties for extended periods of time, they can still get a sense of what is happening at the location by connecting the video feed with cloud computing software. If users use of cloud technology and network options of an outside cloud provider, users will often be provided with a website which he or she must simply log into to monitor and review footage. Even if the user is across the globe, he or she will be able to gain peace of mind in seeing first-hand that the property is safe and secure. If an incident does occur, the individual can set up an alert system that will notify them of the problem as it happens. This gives users the ability to alert the authorities of the problem from across the globe.

As the cloud computing technology becomes increasingly secure and affordable, its place in the security industry will only grow. In the past, law enforcement officials were only able to review security feeds if they were submitted in the form of a video tape after the incident occurred. However, today, it is possible to give authorities access to a video feed as the incident unfolds. Many providers allow users to give third parties permission to view live feeds through cloud networks, or users can also give the authorities their personal log-in information to allow them to view the footage. This ability to view assaults, break-ins and other crimes as they happen can help officials understand exactly what is happening in a situation and figure out the best way to approach it when they arrive on the scene.
