Vivotek’s Smart IR system is a unique infrared system that carefully signifies objects of importance so as not to wash them out in night time viewing. Essentially, what often occurs with cameras is that their infrared lighting will kick into gear, and then promptly ‘white out’ large portions of the image, making them largely invisible. And if it’s not the white portions that are not viewable, then it’s the areas around them, as often what’s blotted out in white is contrasted with areas blotted out in blackness! No good! Vivotek’s Smart IR technology automatically balances these contrasting settings out so as to better produce an image with all objects viewable.

What is Smart IR?
Smart IR, or Smart Infrared, is a technology used in security cameras to improve the quality of night vision images and prevent overexposure of nearby objects when the IR (infrared) LEDs are activated. It’s particularly useful in scenarios where the camera needs to capture clear and detailed images in low-light or complete darkness.
How Smart IR Works
Adjustable IR Intensity: Cameras equipped with Smart IR have IR LEDs that can automatically adjust their intensity based on the distance of the object being monitored. This means that when an object is close to the camera, the IR intensity is reduced to prevent overexposure and glare.
Eliminates Overexposure: By dynamically adjusting the IR illumination, Smart IR prevents objects that are very close to the camera from appearing too bright or washed out in the video. This ensures that details are captured accurately, even in close-up scenes.
Optimal Night Vision: Smart IR technology ensures that objects at different distances from the camera receive appropriate levels of IR illumination, resulting in even and well-balanced night vision. This is particularly useful for outdoor surveillance or monitoring large areas.
Reduces Hotspots: Without Smart IR, objects very close to the camera can create “hotspots” in the image, making it difficult to see other objects in the frame. Smart IR minimizes this issue by adjusting the IR output as needed.
Enhanced Image Quality: Overall, Smart IR helps deliver clearer and more usable night vision footage by maintaining a consistent level of illumination throughout the camera’s field of view.
Benefits of Smart IR
- Prevents overexposure and glare in close-up scenes.
- Ensures even and balanced illumination for objects at different distances.
- Reduces the need for manual adjustments of IR settings.
- Enhances the overall quality of night vision footage.
- Improves the camera’s ability to capture details in low-light and nighttime conditions.
Keep in mind that not all VIVOTEK cameras have Smart IR technology, so it’s essential to check the camera’s specifications or documentation to see if this feature is available. When selecting a camera for your surveillance needs, consider the specific lighting conditions in your environment and whether Smart IR or similar technologies are beneficial for your application.
