How much storage does my NVR need?

The functions of your network video recorder and overall security camera system depend on your system’s storage. As shown above, the storage in your system is dependent on several factors and the general settings of the cameras. Storage capacity must be decided based on how long your cameras will be recording in terms of days, what the preferred framerate will be, the level of activity the camera will examine, and what quality of the footage is provided per camera. Each of these can be decided by the calculator above.

How do I add more storage to NVR?

When your storage runs low, there are two paths to take: Change security system settings to cut back on data consumption or apply more storage. Tips for reducing data consumption include:

  1. Apply lower resolution where possible
  2. Use a more modern form of encoding, i.e. H265 rather than H265
  3. Use motion activation or sensors

The other method of enhancing your network video recorder is to apply another storage device internally or externally. While this effectively solves a problem in the short term, your security system may run into the same problem later on without attention being applied to how video footage is recorded.

How long will my NVR record for?

Unless specified or programmed otherwise, an NVR will record constantly. The network video recorder can receive data from security cameras in intervals or continuously without any problem. Whereas each device has a storage limit, this does not mean it will stop when that limit is reached. Instead, the Network video recorder will simply cycle through the oldest data and then continue. Most security NVR last up to five years depending on the environment but can last longer when kept in good condition.

What happens when NVR is full?

A common misconception with modern recording devices is that they stop functioning when they run out of storage, but this is not so. Unless programmed otherwise, a network video recorder will overwrite the oldest video footage present and keep recording. That way, the recorder can constantly record and stream without issue throughout the year if needed.
