PoE Extenders
Power over Ethernet or PoE extenders are devices used to extend the connection between two PoE-capable devices like a network video recorder and internet protocol camera. This list also includes Power over Coaxial extenders, which benefit analog-based security camera systems. These devices are installed between correlating cables and generally have a design that can be secured to a surface. However, while extenders can be placed multiple times, the signal strength and power will be limited to specific parameters. Typical acceptable quality through RG-59U coaxial cables, for example, has a limit of around 700 feet.
Vivotek, Axis, ACTi, Altronix, Geovision, and Oculur have manufactured extenders available through A1 Security Cameras.
Key features of PoE Extenders for IP Cameras
- Weather Resistance: Bullet cameras are typically weatherproof or weather-resistant, allowing them to withstand various environmental conditions such as rain, snow, and dust. This makes them suitable for outdoor installations.
- Day/Night Functionality: Many Geovision Bullet Cameras are equipped with infrared (IR) LEDs to capture clear images in low-light or nighttime conditions. This feature enables 24/7 surveillance.
- High Resolution: GeoVision cameras often offer high-resolution video capture, providing clear and detailed images. This is essential for identifying faces, license plates, or other critical details in the footage.
- Varifocal Lens: Some models may have a varifocal lens, allowing users to adjust the focal length to achieve the desired field of view. This flexibility is useful for adapting to different surveillance scenarios.
- Wide Dynamic Range (WDR): WDR technology helps to capture clear images in scenes with a high contrast between bright and dark areas, such as entrances with strong sunlight and shaded areas.
- Power over Ethernet (PoE): Many Geovision cameras support PoE, which allows both power and data to be transmitted over a single Ethernet cable. This simplifies installation and reduces the need for additional power cables.
- Motion Detection and Alerts: These cameras often come with motion detection capabilities. When motion is detected, the camera can trigger alerts or notifications to alert users to potential security events.
- Remote Monitoring: GeoVision cameras can be integrated into larger surveillance systems, and their footage can often be accessed remotely through computer software or mobile apps. This allows users to monitor their property or business from anywhere with an internet connection.
What does a PoE extender do?
A Power over Ethernet (PoE) extender serves as a vital solution in networking environments where the standard PoE range of approximately 100 meters falls short. Its primary function is to extend both data connectivity and electrical power transmission beyond this conventional limit over a single Ethernet cable. By amplifying and regenerating PoE signals, these devices enable the deployment of powered network devices, such as IP cameras and access points, at greater distances from the central network switch. This capability is particularly valuable in scenarios such as large industrial settings, outdoor surveillance systems, or expansive facilities where the need for extended reach surpasses the constraints of traditional PoE infrastructure.
There are two main types of PoE extenders: midspan and endspan. Midspan PoE extenders are typically positioned between the network switch and the powered device, injecting additional power to amplify the signal. On the other hand, endspan PoE extenders, also known as PoE repeaters, are installed near the powered device and serve to regenerate the PoE signal. Both types contribute to overcoming the distance limitations of standard PoE, ensuring reliable power and data connectivity for networked devices across extended reaches. As businesses and industries continue to rely on networked technologies, PoE extenders play a crucial role in optimizing the flexibility and efficiency of PoE-enabled networks.
How far can a PoE Extender work?
It is never recommended that PoC be used over long distances. Power over Ethernet extenders is limited to around 2000 feet in maximum length between an applicable device and a switch or recorder. However, whether any distance is reliable is dependent on the output of power.
What is better PoE or PoC?
For quality, Power over Ethernet is much better due to being related to more modern forms of security cameras and recording devices. However, Power over Coaxial can transmit data and power over longer distances. In addition, newer devices related to both have emergency shutoff capabilities.
Network extensions are communications devices that are deployed along a network to share, extend, or gain access to the network topology. Cable distances up to 1 mile can be achieved by deploying quickly by connecting to a network expander, coax or UTP cables.

Do all Ethernet cables support PoE?
Not all Ethernet cables are designed to support Power over Ethernet (PoE). PoE requires specific types of cables that can handle both data transmission and power delivery without causing excessive heat or power loss. The two common types of Ethernet cables used for PoE applications are Cat5e and Cat6 cables.
