• Encoders: Surveillance encoders are devices or software components that convert analog video signals (from CCTV cameras, for instance) into digital formats. They encode the analog video into digital data streams, making it compatible with modern digital surveillance systems. This digital encoding not only ensures better video quality and flexibility but also allows for efficient storage and transmission over networks. Encoders can also provide compression to reduce bandwidth requirements and storage space.
• Decoders: Decoders in surveillance systems are responsible for the reverse process. They take digital video streams and decode them into a format that can be displayed on monitors or recorded for later analysis. Decoders can also handle video analytics, allowing for real-time processing of video feeds to detect events or anomalies.

Encoders and decoders are used in various aspects of surveillance systems to enhance their functionality and efficiency:
